My claim is that full affirmation of same-sex marriage and transgender identity is the most biblical approach to the LGBTQ community. My study led me to believe that, though well-intentioned, the institutional church has gotten this question completely wrong. I know that’s a big claim. I know it might sound audacious or even deluded to some people. For others, it is as hopeful as an oasis in the desert. You’re thirsty, it’s dry, and you’re hoping this promise is not an illusion. One thing most of us can agree on is that many Christian churches today are struggling to have open, robust, respectful conversations about homosexuality and the LGBTQ community. Many of us are struggling with the collateral damage caused by much of what institutional Christianity has done, and are struggling to find a way forward in the churches we love. I believe there is a way forward, and I believe things can get better if we have the courage to get curious and start learning.

Adventist Families with LGBTIQ+ Loved Ones

Faith, identity, and sexuality collide in this raw and moving documentary about the challenges and spiritual journeys of three Seventh-day Adventists who love God and their church and are also gay.
Caught in the collision of two worlds, three gay and lesbian Seventh-day Adventists wrestle with how to reconcile their faith, identity, and sexuality. One young man spent five years in "ex-gay" therapy trying to become straight, but now he's falling in love with another man and wondering if that can be okay. Another was an Adventist pastor in Brazil who was fired for being gay. Can he find his calling again? And a lesbian mom from the midwest wants her daughters to grow up with her faith and beliefs, even though she knows her church might not accept their family.
Growing up Adventist means knowing you belong. And being Adventist is about much more than a set of beliefs--it's a close-knit community not easily left. Discovering you are gay in this community often means loss and exile from all that has been home. This feature-length documentary follows their raw and moving journeys as they wrestle with deep questions and struggle to find a place where they can integrate identity, love, and belief.

ENOUGH ROOM AT THE TABLE is a dialogue film set at the intersection of faith, gender, and sexuality. It’s meant to model the sacred space that opens up when we gather to genuinely listen to each other and participate in each other’s lives. Our differences in beliefs, theological paradigms, and practice don’t disappear; but we stop seeing each other as position statements or labels and instead see each other as fellow beloved children of God. We start looking like the sort of people who are known by their love.
This film shows a weekend dialogue as 12 Adventists from around the United States gathered to engage and converse about topics often not discussed (or often discussed without key voices at the table). The group includes pastors, educators, parents, and LGBT+ Adventists, all from differing theological paradigms, experiences, and perspectives.
The participants didn’t know each other before this weekend, but they were committed to open, authentic, and respectful dialogue. The deeply honest, sacred, and inspiring dialogue they model is what we’re making available now. We hope this dialogue inspires viewers to host your own small group conversations in your own homes, churches, and communities as it’s a powerful and transformative process that will create ripples of hope and healing.
